For one week, they chose active modes of transport and avoided individual cars as they tried to Test the Network. The group were deliberately selected because of their professional roles and\/or suburb they live in. The purpose was to see what kind of daily travel was possible without a car, for different groups of people in our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the results, well &#8211; watch <strong>this video<\/strong> to hear from our challengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Launch Test the Network.mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/643320351?h=cae3e13bcd&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Queenstown and Arrowtown host world class cycle trails and a regular and affordable bus service. These are made possible by investment to make the destination experience better for visitors. Locals benefit significantly from the trails and bus, but many of us are sick of seeing empty buses trundling past. We also often forget that the trails are well located for commuters as well as recreational riders. There are reasons why cars are the most obvious choice for all of us; distances, the climate, the hills. That does not mean they are always the best choice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following our Test the Network challengers for seven days revealed some interesting information about how and why we use transport. We also learned a lot about what was possible with an e-bike and a bus card. Firstly, let\u2019s meet the challengers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had representation from age 35 \u2013 early 60s. Most of the challengers were able cyclists, but inexperienced e-bikers. Many had never used the Orbus service in Queenstown and all but one were committed to using a car for their daily commute. The whole of the basin was well represented, with challengers based in Arrowtown, Arthur\u2019s Point, Shotover Country, Frankton, Jack\u2019s Point, and Goldfield Heights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we learned:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>All of them would use an e-bike to commute if they had access to it. On the whole, the challengers found commuting on an e-bike a \u2018no sweat\u2019 experience that often made their day more enjoyable. Using a combination of roads and trails meant that safety wasn\u2019t an issue*.<\/li><li>The bus was on time and congestion generally wasn\u2019t an issue in getting them places on time. Being on the bus enabled a gentler start to the day, enabling activities like reading the paper or a book, or listening to music.<\/li><li>Challengers had more money as they weren\u2019t paying for petrol.<\/li><li>Active travel was sometimes slower than a direct trip in a car, particularly if travelling to multiple suburbs in one day.<\/li><li>The cost of an e-bike is viewed as a barrier.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>*Note: the Jack\u2019s Point based family did not cycle on State Highway 6. Every day generally presented a new type of travel mode, which required thinking and planning to execute. Like with anything, the more regularly one does something, the easier it becomes. It was the challengers\u2019 commitment to the project that drove them to continue to use the e-bike and bus combo. This was encouraging as it showed us that the e-bike was a genuinely effective tool in supporting a commitment to active commuting. If the e-bike hadn\u2019t proved its worth in the first few days, the challengers wouldn\u2019t have maintained their commitment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daily videos by each challenger highlighted the pros and cons, which varied across the different individuals. We think a small step is possible and the challenge has shown that our existing network is capable of supporting our combined efforts. Reduction, rather than elimination, is a realistic long-term goal for our community.
