Urban Survival – Empowering Women to Active Travel Safely
In 2024, Lightfoot launched Urban Survival for women aged 16-30 years. The programme, delivered with Shukokai Karate’s Sensei Pat Quaid is designed to equip women with the skills and confidence they need to navigate the challenges of urban life.
Urban Survival is about building resilience, helping women develop self-reliance and the knowledge and skills to tackle unexpected situations with ease.

WHY do an urban survival course?
The research is clear, it’s a jungle out there. Too many girls and women have negative experiences using active travel modes.
We’d like to believe that everyone feels safe, but NZ based research shows that in some cities, up to 70% of women and girls have experienced sexual harassment on public transport.
At Lightfoot, we’re committed to equitable access to transport, which includes people feeling safe when using active modes.
